Situational Awareness For Everyone

Is Essential In The Workplace

Situational Awareness For Everyone (SAFE) is the key to identifying potential threats/dangers before they become a crisis. Render Safe Consultants’ safety training provides your employees with the tools necessary to become more aware of their environment, making them better prepared to identify suspicious behavior and danger. Without this training, the vast majority of your employees would miss these indicators, potentially putting themselves and their colleagues in harm’s way.

Personal Safety of Your People: Every great company recognizes their people as their most important asset. However, beyond viewing them as important assets, companies today have a direct responsibility to provide their people with a safe work environment.

Violence / Crisis Prevention: There are numerous ways to prevent workplace violence. The majority of workplace violence incidents have revealed that prior to the violence, there were suspicious indicators or red flags that were overlooked or ignored. Sadly, many incidents could have been recognized and prevented.

Company Unity: Participants in Render Safe’s training realize their colleagues sitting on either side of them could play a role in their wellbeing and vice versa. There is no training that creates greater team unity than one that ties the personal safety of colleagues together.

Planning: Most companies are thoughtful about planning for business trends, customer needs, on-boarding new hires etc. Render Safe’s training should simply be viewed as one more common sense element of company planning for workplace crises.

Recruitment: Companies participating in Render Safe’s training demonstrate a level of concern for the safety and wellbeing of their people. As we know, this kind of care for people can greatly add to a company’s reputation and thereby their recruitment success.

Situational Awareness and Normalcy Bias

Crisis Response
and Reaction

Proactive
Communication

Unfortunately there is a cultural phenomenon called Normalcy Bias. This usually occurs during a critical incident where people tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation. SAFE training gives the tools to replace Normalcy Bias with Action Bias.

This training provides a common sense approach to reporting suspicious / dangerous behavior that has been identified. We also recommend the national “See Something - Say Something” campaign that has proved to be a very successful campaign, preventing several critical incidents. SAFE training also leverages social media to provide individuals with constant situational awareness updates.

When in crisis the logical section of the brain shuts down and the brain depends on the intuitive section for direction. Unless you have had prior experiences or training in crisis management, your decision-making process will be delayed and therefore move you to the “victim” side of the survivability spectrum. SAFE training provides those intuitive tools that will be easily retained to maintain a “Survivor’s Mindset” during a crisis that will assist in keeping you on the “survivor’s” side of the spectrum.

Render Safe Consultants can assist in the development of a comprehensive Emergency Action Plan or can review and update existing plans.

An Emergency Action Plan (EAP) is a document that is required by OSHA standards to facilitate and organize employer and employee actions during an emergency. It is a written plan detailing step-by-step procedures to follow during emergencies such as fire, severe weather or workplace violence. There are three key reasons why every company should have an EAP beside the OSHA requirement:

  • It enhances your company’s ability to recover from financial losses, damages to equipment or products or business interruption.
  • It bonds management and employees by providing a culture of safety as well as shared responsibilities in the plan.
  • It establishes favorable relationships with local emergency responders who know you have an EAP and have communicated well the details of it with your employees.
Man watching security footage

Every company needs security procedures and protocols to protect their personnel, hardware, software, networks and data, Render Safe consultants can provide a Physical Security professional to conduct a walk-through of your facility to assess your security needs as well as identify vulnerabilities in your existing security plan. We focus our assessment around 4 tasks:

  • Identify assets to determine their value loss impact and criticality.
  • Assess the nature of the threats so that the scope of the problem can be determined.
  • Conduct a physical security survey in order to identify the vulnerabilities of the organization.
  • Perform a risk analysis so that appropriate countermeasures can be developed.
Parcel & Enveloppe

It is important that every employee handling or receiving mail can identify a suspicious letter or parcel. Although occurrences are extremely rare, it is essential to know what to do when suspicious mail is received. All staff must remain alert for the tell-tale signs of a potentially dangerous piece of mail or parcel. Render Safe Consultants can provide an interactive two hour training that when completed by your employees gives them the tools and the confidence to handle mail and parcel safely. This training is delivered by a certified bomb technician that has hundreds of hours of experience in responding to hazardous devices, mail and parcels. This training focuses on three areas:

  • Recognition and identification of dangerous items.
  • Proper procedures when identified.
  • Bomb threat management and procedures.
